Day 1 of 5

Mercy with today’s date on it

It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22–23

Jeremiah wrote these words sitting in rubble. Lamentations is a book of grief, written after Jerusalem fell, and right in the middle of the saddest book in the Bible is this line about mornings.

Here’s what I love about it: mercy isn’t a savings account you filled up on a good year and are slowly spending down. It shows up fresh every morning, like the tide coming back in on the Carolina coast. The tide doesn’t check whether anyone on the beach deserves it. It just comes.

That means you don’t have to drag yesterday’s failures into today’s mercy. You don’t have to have it all figured out by noon. Today’s portion is enough for today, and tomorrow there will be more.

Sit with thisWhat are you still carrying from yesterday that God has already covered?

PrayLord, thank you that your mercy shows up before I do. Help me receive today’s portion without apologizing for needing it. Amen.

Scripture quotations are from the King James Version.
