But is it Beneficial?

Updated: Nov 30, 2022

Having kids will make you think about how you utilize your time more than you probably otherwise would. It took a while with a newborn of course to get into a routine that works. Between a small business, a private project in the works and trying to ensure that I’m a present mom teaching my son character and faith, it can feel like my days flash before me. Maybe you feel the same in one way or another with your time.

I sat down one night to turn the TV on to chill out after a long day with a teething baby. Embarrassed to admit it, my guilty pleasure is a few reality TV shows! As I sunk into our bed to catch thirty minutes of reprieve, I flipped on a show and heard God audibly say, “Is that beneficial?”. Immediately, this scripture flashed through my mind – “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything"—but not everything is constructive. (1 Corinthians 10: 23-24). It sparked an entire dialogue with the Lord! I recognized how I felt after an episode. I didn’t feel encouraged, I didn’t laugh, I didn’t learn anything…I didn’t actually enjoy it. And I didn't even realize it until He made me aware! So no, it wasn’t beneficial nor constructive. What a waste of my time! This life verse is applicable to way more than just a choice of what show to watch. It applies to every single aspect of how we choose to spend our time and every single thing we do! Choosing what to watch is just a small slice of the pie.

Underneath that scripture, it says, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God”. And further down from that, it says “For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved” (1 Corinthians 10: 31 + 33).

My conscience and conviction couldn’t allow me to press play after I had paused my trash TV. Lol! I switched over to a show that made me laugh. Now that is beneficial! I have sought God in my daily life for a long time, but applying this scripture in particular in a fresh way gave me new perspective. It has propelled my days into more joy, fullness and intentionality!

Here are the specific questions I ask the Lord throughout my day before putting action to anything:

Is this beneficial or constructive?

God, is this what you want me to do?

Is this going to help Shepherd learn and be a better human?

Is this worth my time?...Why?

How can I bless this person?

Does this benefit my body or my mind?

Is this good for my family?

Will this help me grow spiritually?

So where are you at? Are you seeking what’s beneficial, constructive and glorifying to God? He created you. He knows how to lead you in the best use of your time. Ask Him! Let’s be intentional and careful with our time. What a waste to sit idle as we give our attention to things that have no value and don’t serve us or others. I challenge you to shift your focus to how you can bring benefit to yourself and others today. Ask the Lord what the best use of your time is! He knows you. He knows your heart and how best you can spend your days in ways that fill your soul and your schedule. All while having intention and holy purpose.

How can I pray for you? Shoot me a message or email, I’d love to pray for you.
