Pride destroys opportunity

We all deal with pride in our hearts that we have to keep in check. If we let it take residence within us, it can keep us from Gods best for us. We don't want to miss the Holy Spirits promptings, or something He wants done or said. If we aren't in step with the Spirit, pride can slide in under the radar and get in the way of our obedience, if we don't catch it. Which we all fall short of at times!

Pride can affect our relationships in so many ways. Philippians 2:3-4 tells us, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interest of others.” When we sit in our pride, we’re self focused and we miss out on things like making space for others. We could miss how we should minister to others for lack of leaning into the Holy Spirit. We can get distracted by ourselves and the desires of our flesh, which leaves very little time to recognize the beauty of the people around us who God created. We’re called to build one another up, not ourselves – Proverbs 27:2, “Let another mouth praise you and not your own mouth; a stranger and not your own lips”. If we’re so full of ourselves and our own lives, how is there space to encourage someone else?

Pride can affect our development because it’s like having blinders on. It can blind us into thinking we don’t need anyone, or we don’t need to learn. We all have temporary moments of this that can creep in if we allow it. It stunts our growth and creates stagnancy in us when we think we have it all figured out, rather than a heart posture of humility that is eager to grow. We should all be desperate for what the Lord wants us to teach us and surrender our pride to Him daily. And what a daily practice it is! A recurring surrender to what He wants to show us. James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble”. Praise God for His grace that we need daily when we get in the way!

It can affect our opportunity for love, authenticity, truth, relationship, correction…and so much more. Pride is the absence of real truth because pride creates our own false reality. A puffed up, over-inflated reality where we’re the star of our lives rather than Jesus. It’s a delusion that misleads us into thinking we’ve got it all handled and figured out on our own, but that’s not what Jesus tells us. In fact, He says “I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” John 15:5. We can do nothing fruitful or good without Him. Anything good in us comes from Him and we need to stay connected to the vine!

It can take a harsh jolt to shake us awake to reality if we’re sitting in pride. It awakens us to the reality that humility is a necessity in all things. We should be lowly in heart and always do our best to remember that we’re called to put others before ourselves. To grow in grace. And that only Jesus provides all good things, and opportunities. Proverbs 29:23, “One’s pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor”.
