Our faith is the foundation of our lives as Christians. In fact, our faith and trust in God matters SO much, it’s how we access Him and the Holy Spirit. 1 Peter 1:5 says it’s BY our faith that God is protecting us by His power. And Ephesians 2:8-9 says that it’s by grace we’ve been saved, THROUGH faith. Action words — by and through. Faith requires action! James 2: 14-17: “What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”— but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless”.
Faith also requires refinement and trial. “So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world”. (1 Peter 1:6-7) The refinement of our faith through trials is earning for us glory and honor with Jesus. I love how James 1:1-3 puts it - “when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance”. Our faith is being strengthened by the trials we endure!
Faith calls us to action.
It’s through faith that we’re saved.
God protects us by faith.
Trials develop and deepen our faith.
Is your faith muscle being stretched regularly? Do you feel your faith deepening your perseverance as you endure what life hurls at you? Are you putting action behind your faith? 2 Timothy 2:11-13: This is a trustworthy saying:
If we die with him, we will also live with him.
If we endure hardship, we will reign with him.
If we deny him, he will deny us.
If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.
Jesus embodies faith Himself. Even as we navigate trusting Him and being faithful to Him in every corner of our lives to the best of our abilities, He never wavers. Never has, never will. He can’t, because faithful is who He is!
